AEG and MGM Resorts are working towards building a new sports and entertainment arena west of the Vegas strip. While the piece below doesn’t specify hockey as being one of the sports hosted in the future facility, it seems all but certain the popular pre-season game known as Frozen Fury will have a new home once the project is complete. If so, it will be a welcomed change for hockey fans who have pointed out how poor the current Frozen Fury location at the MGM Grand (seen above) is for watching the sport. The project is only in the planning stages and there is no estimate of a completion date.

The arena would host boxing, concerts and other sporting and entertainment events. Situated between New York-New York and Monte Carlo — two MGM Resorts casino-hotel properties — the building would serve as the centerpiece of a revitalization of the area that extends from Las Vegas Boulevard to Frank Sinatra Drive. The project also would involve retail shops and dining destinations.
“Our extensive sports and music assets, together with our global network of venues, including arenas in key West Coast markets such as Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Los Angeles and San Diego, will allow us to maximize booking and operations opportunities,” AEG president and CEO Tim Leiweke said in a statement.
An arena there would open up numerous possibilities for AEG, all of them nice moneymaking ones. Not to mention that AEG also owns the rights to any NHL expansion into Las Vegas.
Pretty smart deal for AEG to get involved in.
